This is my second year of teaching here and I love it! On top of my 20 kids in my class that I have at school, my husband Jeremy and I have a three-year-old son, Mason, and a one-year-old daughter, Jayden. We currently live in Ventura, but I grew up a farmers daughter east of Northwood, Iowa. I always tell my school kids my three favorite things in the world are: coffee, flowers, and Target! I believe the most important thing I can teach my kindergarteners is to be a good friend and good person, that's also the way I strive to be as a teacher. I'm looking forward to another great school year in kindergarten!

My position at Clear Creek this year is very new and exciting. I float among four different classrooms and co-teach with the classroom teacher to meet the students' needs right there in the classroom with their peers. Hello! My name is Sarah Christian. I am the fourth grade language arts/spelling teacher. This is my first year teaching, and I could not be more thrilled to begin my career at such an amazing school. I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) in May with my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and minors in theatre, math, and literacy. I grew up in the Des Moines area, but I am excited to be making the move to Clear Lake to teach at my Dad’s alma mater. As a teacher, I strive to instill a love for learning by making writing an exciting and engaging part of the day. I believe that learning should be a positive, safe, and engaging place; where risks and diversities are celebrated, and where students can walk away knowing that what they do matters.

“Be somebody who makes everybody feel like a somebody.” -Kid President

If you walk into my classroom you will see the words YOU MATTER in large black letters on the wall. I strive to create a classroom environment that feels like family. Students in my classroom will often refer to our class as a school family. I believe every student has value, is an important contributor to the group, and truly matters. Now in my 20th year teaching 2nd grade, I feel just as passionate about kids as I did my first year. I thrive on instilling the love of learning and the love of self into all kids I am lucky enough to teach.

My husband, Kyle, and I moved to Clear Lake in 1995. We have two sons, Parker (freshman at The University of Iowa) and Cael (CLHS sophomore).

I am so grateful to serve as Clear Creek/Sunset's principal. As a child, I didn't particularly like school. It wasn't until I was a parent and worked at a school that I realized I truly had a passion for kids and their learning. I was inspired to pursue my own learning. I went back to college and became a teacher. That was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

My favorite part about getting to be at school is seeing the kids as they walk through our doors. They make my day everyday.

Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Doug, our son, Bill and his wife, Andrea. We look forward to becoming grandparents soon. We have two dogs, Riley and Gus. Our family enjoys the outdoors.

Eighth Grade Social Studies

As an eighth grade social studies teacher, I enjoy helping students discover and learn information about the concepts of government, geography, American history, economics, civic ideals, and current events. We have fun using an inquiry approach where students construct questions, gather relevant information, and present responses supported by evidence and reasoning. One unit that students always remember is the Debate Unit. Students choose questions to debate, research, prepare arguments and counter-arguments. All of their hard work pays off when they step up to the podium to showcase their ideas in a live debate.

I have been teaching for 20 years! I have taught various grade levels including first, fourth, fifth, sixth and currently eighth grade. I'm very blessed to work closely with my eighth grade team to bring cross curricular units to our students. We have a lot of fun at the middle school as we strive to help students develop positive relationships, collaborate, investigate, and learn from mistakes. Each day brings a new opportunity to connect to students in a positive manner to help them become the best version of themselves. I can't imagine a better place to work each day since I have the opportunity to spend time with our students and staff at the Clear Lake Middle School.

Finn, Lesley

Elementary Special Education

My name is Lesley Finn and I am a teacher at Clear Creek Elementary. I began my career in 1989 in Minnesota after graduating from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in elementary education and an emphasis in special education. After 2 years I moved back to my hometown of Mason City where I worked at John Adams Middle School for a year and then transferred over to Roosevelt Elementary, where I worked for 10 years. It was during this time that I met and married my husband who now owns a small computer company in Clear Lake. It was also during these years that we were blessed with 3 boys. Two of my boys attend CLHS while the oldest is working on his college degree at NIACC. Following my work at Roosevelt, I took some time off to be a stay at home mom for 2 years. When I decided to go back to work I was fortunate to be hired as a teacher to work at Sunset. Later I moved to Lincoln where I taught first grade for 3 years and my time at Clear Creek has been spent teaching various levels of special education. I feel very fortunate for all the teaching experiences I have had. I know that I have learned as much from my students as I have taught them.

I think it is important to realize that every person has a gift or talent they can share with the world. Some of those gifts are easy to recognize but those that aren’t can make the most impact on the world. Learning empathy and compassion is so important these days and our kids at Clear Creek teach this and learn this from one another daily. Social skills, emotional skills and independence are something I get to be part of teaching everyday in my job. I love this because I have so much help from the wonderful, compassionate student body at Clear Creek. I also get to find creative ways to let my students show how smart they truly are. They are proof that just because you don’t communicate the way everyone else does or you don’t move and look like everyone else, you can still learn to read, write, do math and so many more things that people may not realize. My philosophy is not to focus on what it seems a person can’t do but instead to recognize what they can do and use that to help them learn.

I have taught upper elementary for over 25 years and currently teach reading for all of the fifth graders at Clear Creek. I believe that all children are special and can accomplish great things with the support of their parents and teachers. No one is perfect, and making mistakes is an important part of learning. We never stop learning! I believe that children who don’t like reading just haven’t found the right book, and I can help them find it. Every child makes an impact and difference in my life, and I hope to do the same to theirs.

Helping kids to realize their potential and to use it to change the world is my passion! What I love most about teaching young learners is the joy and energy with which they come to school every morning. My goal as a teacher is to capitalize on that energy and help them build a life-long love of learning. Outside of school, I am a mom to Gabriel and a wife to Kyle. Wow! How time flies! This fall marks my 13th year in the district. For the first nine years, I spent time in the middle teaching eighth grade students the skills of reading and writing. I would never have imagined I belonged in the middle school setting, but I truly loved being at school each and every day. From the challenging games of Scrabble to creating a student-driven classroom, I learned so much about myself.

One of my greatest passions is learning and challenging myself which is why I took on the role of Technology Integration Coach in the fall of 2014. It was a new position in the district, so no mold had been set. I loved the opportunities then and still love them today! Every day the challenge changes, from introducing STEAM into the preschool classroom, to implementing Project Lead the Way in the elementary classrooms, to publishing blogs in a high school Sociology classroom.

I am so excited to be part of a district that is always striving to do better and think outside the box!

Hi! My name is Bethany Hythecker and this is already my eighth year as a school nurse for Clear Lake! I'm entering my third year working part-time, though I see the students less, I still get to develop relationships with them and our great staff here at school, while spending more time with my family at home. At home, I spend much of my time attempting to be creative with healthy meals for the family, helping my husband take care of our small acreage, and learning to see life through the eyes of a toddler and infant.

When I started college, I pursued P.E. and Health Education at the University of Northern Iowa because I had always had an interest in health and wellness. However, with one year of college left, I made the jump from an education major to a nursing major at Allen College of Nursing in Waterloo to pursue my Bachelor's in Nursing.

After college, I took a job with the Wolfe Eye Clinic in West Des Moines and worked with a Pediatric Ophthalmologist. During my time there, I was able to travel to Romania and assist with eye surgeries of people unable to afford medical care. I eventually wanted to practice my nursing skills in a hospital setting because I hadn't had the chance since graduating from college and so started working at Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines. When I got married and moved to North Iowa, I applied for the job as school nurse and and have loved the staff, students and families from the from the beginning. I'm so thankful I'm able use my education background with my training in nursing to serve others!
