Hello!  I have been with the Clear Lake School District for 10+ years with a majority of my years in 3rd grade.  I enjoy incorporating technology when it fits to help engage and challenge students.  Meeting students where they're at when they enter my classroom is important to me.  I know every students learns at a different pace and in different ways.  I want to instill the love for learning and the importance of being kind to others in all my the students.  Every school year is a new and exciting adventure.

I have been teaching in the Clear Lake School system for over 3 decades now. Along the way, my main objective has been to expose children to the joys of music, whether it is performing, creating, or listening to it. With so many genres out there, it is of extreme importance that students learn an appreciation of ALL genres out there. Not saying that each style of music has to become their new favorite, but we must respect the fact that it IS a favorite to other music enthusiasts! We need to remember that as well as to encourage each other to stay open minded to the new music that is being created on a daily basis. My final wish is that everyone will stay involved in some aspect of music performance or other area of the arts, find a place to participate in and give it your all. The personal growth and life long friendships that you gain are priceless!

This is my second year of teaching here and I love it! On top of my 20 kids in my class that I have at school, my husband Jeremy and I have a three-year-old son, Mason, and a one-year-old daughter, Jayden. We currently live in Ventura, but I grew up a farmers daughter east of Northwood, Iowa. I always tell my school kids my three favorite things in the world are: coffee, flowers, and Target! I believe the most important thing I can teach my kindergarteners is to be a good friend and good person, that's also the way I strive to be as a teacher. I'm looking forward to another great school year in kindergarten!

I am so grateful to serve as Clear Creek/Sunset's principal. As a child, I didn't particularly like school. It wasn't until I was a parent and worked at a school that I realized I truly had a passion for kids and their learning. I was inspired to pursue my own learning. I went back to college and became a teacher. That was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

My favorite part about getting to be at school is seeing the kids as they walk through our doors. They make my day everyday.

Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Doug, our son, Bill and his wife, Andrea. We look forward to becoming grandparents soon. We have two dogs, Riley and Gus. Our family enjoys the outdoors.

Elementary Special Education

My name is Lesley Finn and I am a teacher at Clear Creek Elementary. I began my career in 1989 in Minnesota after graduating from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in elementary education and an emphasis in special education. After 2 years I moved back to my hometown of Mason City where I worked at John Adams Middle School for a year and then transferred over to Roosevelt Elementary, where I worked for 10 years. It was during this time that I met and married my husband who now owns a small computer company in Clear Lake. It was also during these years that we were blessed with 3 boys. Two of my boys attend CLHS while the oldest is working on his college degree at NIACC. Following my work at Roosevelt, I took some time off to be a stay at home mom for 2 years. When I decided to go back to work I was fortunate to be hired as a teacher to work at Sunset. Later I moved to Lincoln where I taught first grade for 3 years and my time at Clear Creek has been spent teaching various levels of special education. I feel very fortunate for all the teaching experiences I have had. I know that I have learned as much from my students as I have taught them.

I think it is important to realize that every person has a gift or talent they can share with the world. Some of those gifts are easy to recognize but those that aren’t can make the most impact on the world. Learning empathy and compassion is so important these days and our kids at Clear Creek teach this and learn this from one another daily. Social skills, emotional skills and independence are something I get to be part of teaching everyday in my job. I love this because I have so much help from the wonderful, compassionate student body at Clear Creek. I also get to find creative ways to let my students show how smart they truly are. They are proof that just because you don’t communicate the way everyone else does or you don’t move and look like everyone else, you can still learn to read, write, do math and so many more things that people may not realize. My philosophy is not to focus on what it seems a person can’t do but instead to recognize what they can do and use that to help them learn.

I believe that all children are special and can accomplish great things with the support of their parents and teachers. No one is perfect, and making mistakes is an important part of learning. We never stop learning! I believe that children who don’t like reading just haven’t found the right book, and I can help them find it. Every child makes an impact and difference in my life, and I hope to do the same to theirs.

School Nurse

Hi! My name is Bethany Hythecker and this is already my eighth year as a school nurse for Clear Lake! I'm entering my third year working part-time, though I see the students less, I still get to develop relationships with them and our great staff here at school, while spending more time with my family at home. At home, I spend much of my time attempting to be creative with healthy meals for the family, helping my husband take care of our small acreage, and learning to see life through the eyes of a toddler and infant.

When I started college, I pursued P.E. and Health Education at the University of Northern Iowa because I had always had an interest in health and wellness. However, with one year of college left, I made the jump from an education major to a nursing major at Allen College of Nursing in Waterloo to pursue my Bachelor's in Nursing.

After college, I took a job with the Wolfe Eye Clinic in West Des Moines and worked with a Pediatric Ophthalmologist. During my time there, I was able to travel to Romania and assist with eye surgeries of people unable to afford medical care. I eventually wanted to practice my nursing skills in a hospital setting because I hadn't had the chance since graduating from college and so started working at Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines. When I got married and moved to North Iowa, I applied for the job as school nurse and and have loved the staff, students and families from the from the beginning. I'm so thankful I'm able use my education background with my training in nursing to serve others!

Currently I have Preschool - 12th grade, so I am in all four district buildings making sure students have enjoyable & interesting books to read. I work with teachers to help locate resources as they study various topics, use online resources and follow copyright regulations.

School Nurse

I'm Josi Thompson, the newest member of Clear Lake's team of nurses. I am wife to Seth and mommy to three little beauties.  I'm a lover of Jesus, baseball, horses, and everything about the peace and beauty of the country.  And I'm a somewhat new found lover of coffee and running- not enjoyed in unison, of course. 🙂

As a child I spent a lot of time with my grandparents on their farm being immersed in a plethora of life skills ranging from taming kittens, to welding, "fixing" things in the shop, driving all things with wheels, learning to bake, sew, to do Pinterest inspired projects before Pinterest was a thing, and even a little Morse Code on the old CB radio.  I have to give a big thanks to them for investing time shaping my desire to care for and teach people.  They were great models of selflessness, patience and giving.  So when it came time to settle on "what I wanted to be when I grew up" the decision to choose a career in nursing or education was difficult for me.  Ultimately, I settled on nursing because of the diversity the profession offered, while still hoping to someday end up in an educational setting.  So...I completed my ADN from Iowa Lakes Community College and received my BSN from the University of Iowa.  I began my career in nursing at Mercy Medical Center-NI completing a Critically Ill Internship followed by positions in the Intensive Care Unit, Cardiovascular Recovery Unit, and Cardiac Cath Lab, where, on occasion, I still get to serve and keep up on my acute care nursing skills..

This fall marks the beginning of my fourth year at Clear Lake Schools.  Being new to school nursing, I have been a bit caught off guard how fast the seasons change and the months on a school calender turn!  Watching your children journey through these school years has brought me much joy and a little momma heartache on how fast little ones grow older.  Your children have reminded me to give thanks for the season of life I am in and insight into what my life will look like all too soon!  I'm looking forward to what this year has in store for us!

We have a son, Trey, who is a senior in high school. He will be attending NIACC this fall. We also have a cat named Vader and a dog named Carnie.
